Second world war. British soldier John Bramble finds himself alone in a small town located among the Sands of the Sahara. German occupation forces enter the city. To avoid capture, he poses as a dead employee of the small hotel “the Empress of Britain”, which belongs to Farid.

He gradually comes to trust the French housekeeper Mouche, who deeply despises the British for abandoning the French troops at Dunkirk. Later, the hotel becomes the headquarters of General Rommel. Bramble learns that by posing as a servant, he is in even greater danger, since the deceased was an agent who worked for the Nazis. Having managed to convince the Germans that he was working for them, Bramble is assigned to go to Cairo and prepare for the invasion of German troops.
